Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom In-Office Workers Are Less Productive Than Telecommuters

Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom In-Office Workers Are Less Productive Than Telecommuters Ever since Marissa Mayer made her announcement that there would be no more telecommuting at Yahoo!, some people have said that Yahoo! will be loads more productive because employees will no longer be able to skirt their responsibilities and waste time at home. Now let’s have a look at what actually happens during a typical day at the office. You arrive in the morning, spend a half hour getting your coffee and chit chatting with colleagues, an hour checking your e-mail and social media accounts, and an hour in an unnecessary meeting. Then, bam, it’s lunchtime! An hour of errands is followed by another hour of busywork and another hour ofactual work. Then more chit chatting, more coffee, and more online checking. And at 5 or 6PM,you’refollowing everyone else into the elevator. The Office’s Dirty Little Secret This may be an exaggeration, but ifyou’veseen the show The Office or worked in Corporate America for more than five minutes, you get my meaning. Being in an office does not equal productivity. If anything, many people are less productive because they confuse just showing up with getting results. They figure if they spend eight hours in the building that day, thenthey’vedone their jobs. Whether their time was spent usefully and whether the organization is better off because they were in-office is irrelevant. The Miracle of Quiet On the other hand, most telecommuters are masterful at time management. They are accustomed to simultaneously balancing work responsibilities with everything else going on in their lives, and yetdon’thave to contend with the endless distractions of an office or expend 2+ stress-filled hours on a commute. And it’s quiet. So, when they sit down to work, it’s with a laser focus. Because they have to set their own deadlines and meet them without a boss’ supervision, their assignments are completed more efficiently. WHY BINGE HOLIDAY DRINKING IS ANYTHING BUT MERRY -

WHY BINGE HOLIDAY DRINKING IS ANYTHING BUT MERRY - ’Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry. Some of us, however, take those festive suggestions to dangerous lengths and end up binge drinking. While one night of imbibing multiple drinks may only leave you with a hangover, using holiday drinking as an excuse to drink abusively from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve can lead to alcoholism and other negative brain/body effects. Why do people drink too much during the holidays? “A lot of traditions at this time of year involve alcohol,” says Carrie Carlton LCSW at Beachway Therapy in Boynton Beach, Florida.    â€œYou’re with friends and family who you may not see all the time, and you want to have a good time, and so you celebrate with a few drinks. This isn’t harmful as long as you’re aware of your limits.” Unfortunately, that can be more difficult when you’re not used to drinking a lot, as well as when you’re guzzling seasonal cocktails that you’re unaccustomed to. What is binge drinking? Binge drinking is typically defined as more than 5 drinks for men and 4 drinks for women within a short span of time, usually 2 hours. The safest course of action, if you must imbibe, is to pace yourself and space out your drinks to give your liver time to break down the alcohol. What is holiday heart syndrome? Holiday heart syndrome is a term for a reason. The name was coined in 1978 after doctors in New Jersey started noticing patients showing up to emergency rooms with arrhythmias after bouts of heavy drinking, usually during weekends or holidays. These patients were apparently healthy with no history of heart problems or other risk factors. The most common arrhythmia seen with holiday heart syndrome is atrial fibrillation, a condition that increases the chance of stroke and often requires people to be on lifelong blood thinners.  Dr. Duy Nguyen explains that, “Fortunately, holiday heart syndrome can resolve if the drinking stops.    Despite the widely held belief that alcohol is good for your heart, heavy drinking at a holiday party may be enough to cause an arrhythmia and land you in the hospital.” The risk of alcohol poisoning Alcohol poisoning is more common than people realize. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an average of six people a day die from alcohol poisoning and three quarters of them are between the ages of 35-64. Most of them are men. Dr. Nguyen explains that, “Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, so apart from the nausea and vomiting that comes with over drinking, alcohol can slow your breathing, drop your core body temperature and cause seizures. How much alcohol it takes to put your life at risk depends, to a large extent, on your height, weight, when your last meal was and a number of other factors, so each person is different.” Immune System: Drinking too much can weaken your immune system. Chronic drinkers are more liable to contract diseases like pneumonia and tuberculosis than people who do not drink too much.      Drinking a lot on a single occasion can slow your body’s ability to ward off infections. Heart: Alcohol can damage the heart, even just drinking too much on one occasion, causing the following problems: High blood pressure Stroke Arrhythmias â€" Irregular heart beat Cardiomyopathy â€" Stretching and drooping of heart muscle  Liver: Drinking takes a heavy toll on the liver and can lead to a variety of problems including: Liver failure (drinking too much over time) Steatosis, or fatty liver Fibrosis Cirrhosis Alcoholic hepatitis Cancer: Drinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of developing certain cancers, including: Mouth Esophagus Throat Liver Breast To enjoy a safe holiday celebration, consider these tips: Abstain.    You do not need alcohol to be the life of the party. Pace yourself. Avoid binge-drinking. Spread out the consumption of your drinks, consider one drink an hour. Avoid drinks with unknown alcohol content  or mixing alcohol with energy drinks. Caffeine in energy drinks or sodas can mask the effects of alcohol, causing people to drink more alcohol that than intended/are aware. Substitute alcoholic drinks for non-alcoholic drinks. Consider drinking water between each alcoholic beverage to slow your pace and dilute the alcohol in your bloodstream. Don’t forget to eat food.  Starch-heavy foods soak up the alcohol and will mitigate the effects of alcohol on your system. Secure a designated driver.  Keep in mind that a designated driver stays 100 percent sober not the person who drank the least or the least. The Renaissance Soul How to Make Your Passions Your Life - VocationVillage

The Renaissance Soul How to Make Your Passions Your Life - VocationVillage The Renaissance Soul: How to Make Your Passions Your Life A Creative and Practical Guide is a wonderful book for all the people in the world who feel frustrated by the expectation that they should pick just ONE career focus. If it sounds much better to you to follow many (and frequently changing) interests, this is the book for you. A strength of the book is that author Margaret Lobenstine strikes a nice balance between support/encouragement and a clear-eyed understanding of the challenges faced by Renaissance Souls. Lobenstine explains that Renaissance Souls like Leonardo da Vinci, Isabella d’Este, Benjamin Franklin, and Maya Angelou did not confine themselves to a single career focus, but studied diverse subjects and racked up accomplishments spanning many different disciplines and pursuits. Their work histories contain helpful information for Renaissance Souls in the present, even those who arent geniuses or famous. The book includes a quiz to determine if you are a Renaissance Soul. Signs that you might be one are a history of becoming excited by many things at once and having difficulty choosing, loving challenges until they are mastered and then getting bored, and fear of being trapped or limited.Renaissance Souls who embrace the reality of their preferences can make decisions that honor their true personality rather than fight it. They may pursue sequential careers or simultaneous careers that complement each other. Instead of the career counseling metaphor of a path, Lobenstine suggests the metaphor of a tree branching out in myriad directions, some branches overlapping, some intertwining.I appreciate Lobenstine’s discussion about the supposed “security” of choosing one career and sticking with it. She argues persuasively that the people who are the most secure are not those who picked a career because they thought it was a ticket to security. People who love what they do usually do it in a way that impresses and makes it easy to connect with opportunities. By contrast, people chasing security with gritted teeth usually have flimsy support networks and one bad career break can end the illusory security.Lobenstine understand the skepticism with which Renaissance Souls are sometimes regarded in the workplace and she gives tips for how to navigate this. For instance, dynamic industries are more appreciative of flexible and multifaceted skills. She also gives specific suggestions for how to learn new skills without going back to school for multiple college degree s.The book wraps up with time management strategies for people with a lot of different interests and some analysis of the ways in which family expectations can create psychological barriers that get in the way of career and personal happiness.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I believe it will help a lot of people. I recommend it highly.

Job Postings- Truth or Fiction

Job Postings- Truth or Fiction Writing job descriptions and job postings is not an exact science.   There  are training courses, research and studies that define  necessary steps and  elements of writing an effective job description. Then there is the marketing spin that is incorporated in writing the posting to make the company and position sound attractive. Do Employers Know What They Are Looking For? The critical element  in writing  the  posting is based on the employer knowing what they are really looking for.    Do they? Do they  say, I want to hire  someone just like the last  person who was in this job, only better. Or maybe they say Why dont we create a wish list of what we would like and see what we get. Or they might even say, Well just write this posting based on the background and experience of Sally, who well be promoting into the job. Why is this important to you? When writing  your resume, I recommend using the job posting as a guide for what to say and the key words to use. However,   it is important to remember that the employer might not always know what they are exactly looking for.   You may not have all the key words or skills they are asking for, apply anyway.   If you have 50+% of what the job is asking for- apply. Networking Sheds Light Also bear in mind, that the employer may not have  listed skills in the posting that are important to the job.   We cant know this unless we have inside information about the company.   This is why networking with company insiders is so incredibly valuable.   You may be able to uncover skills or a problem that wasnt addressed in the job posting. The process of hiring is extremely risky and extremely personal.   The resume needs to present you both as a sure-fire solution to their problems (skills and accomplishments) as well as someone who is easy to like and get along with (traits).

Psycopathic corporations - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Psycopathic corporations - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The Corporation is a Canadian documentary released last year, which has an interesting premise: Under current law, a corporation is a person. But what kind of person? Considering the odd legal fiction that deems a corporation a ?person? in the eyes of the law, the feature documentary employs a checklist, based on actual diagnostic criteria of the World Health Organization and DSM IV, the standard tool of psychiatrists and psychologists. What emerges is a disturbing diagnosis. Self-interested, amoral, callous and deceitful, a corporation?s operational principles make it anti-social. It breaches social and legal standards to get its way even while it mimics the human qualities of empathy, caring and altruism. It suffers no guilt. Diagnosis: the institutional embodiment of laissez-faire capitalism fully meets the diagnostic criteria of a psychopath. I like the premise, and as Noam Chomsky says in the movie, you must distinguish between the system and the individual. It is perfectly likely, that most individuals in a corporation can be nice, thoughtful, compassionate people, yet the resulting system shows behaviour that is selfish, greedy and short-sighted. While this behaviour is certainly prevalent in some corporations, I think that more and more organizations are starting to realize, that this way of doing business is not sustainable, and are making positive changes. I had the pleasure yesterday of visiting the offices of IKEA in Denmark, to interview them for my book on happiness at work. About 8 months ago, they gave their entire check-out staff a 20% pay raise. They did this partly in recognition of the fact that these people have one of the hardest jobs in IKEA while getting the least amount of money, and partly because they think it will make them money in the long run. This is very far from psycopathic behaviour. It shows a creativity and maturity, based on the realization that there is no inherent oppostion between making money and doing good. Sample clip here.
